There was some plastic gizmo within the webbing of the corkscrew. Not having any idea its purpose, I opened a wine bottle with the cork screw and ended up pushing this plastic thing down the webbing of the cork screw. Unfortunately I did such a good job of this that we were unable to retrieve the thing.
