Mar 11: touring La Boca

This neighborhood of Buenos Aires use to be separated by a lot of marshland from central Buenos Aires.  At one point,  La Boca successfully declared independence from Argentina for one day before the Argentinan military showed up.

La Boca is considered a working class neighborhood.  During Argentina's economically successful years, the famous Argentinan beef used to be processed in La Boca. All the remains not used were thrown into the river, La Plata. This type of pollution was later superceded by upriver chemical pollution.

La Boca (and San Telmo) were the working class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires where the Tango was invented. At first the wealthy of BA didn't want anything to do with the poor man's dance.  Later when Paris France embraced it, the BA rich began to embrace it.
