Gaudi used a lot of models in his design back in the 1800s. Instead of having to rely on complex mathematical formulas to come up with his structural design, he improvised. Here is another model where he used many strings with various weights tied to them to figure out the contours of his columns with respect gravity/weight. He placed a mirror above the string model to see the inverse of how the columns would look (see pic) standing up.
